NORMAN JOHNSON Obituary

Norman Stanley Johnson, of Galt, peacefully passed away on the morning of
September 4, 2025, at U.C. Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California, with his
daughter Terri and grandchildren Kristyn and Matthew by his side. Norman was born on
April 1, 1932, in Jamestown, North Dakota, to Oscar and Nora (Setter) Johnson. He
was raised on his family’s farm and developed a deep love for farming. Eventually, he
took over the family farm to pursue his passion. Norman was a people person, admired
by his family for his natural ability to befriend anyone, including complete strangers. He
met Alice Martin at church, and they got to know each other while roller-skating on
Sunday and Thursday nights. They fell in love and married on September 21, 1957.
Norman served as a Specialist Third Class in the Army. Once their daughters grew up,
Norman started collecting antiques, a sport he thoroughly enjoyed. Norman spent
summers working for the Farmers Union Fertilizer Plant, a time in his life he often
reflected on due to the many cherished friendships he made. In 2015, he and Alice
moved to California to be closer to their children, grandchildren, and extended family.
During trips back to North Dakota, he always made time to visit the fertilizer plant to
reminisce with his friends. Later in life, Norman enjoyed playing bingo and receiving
updates from home, especially regarding the status of the crops on his farmland.
Norman was preceded in death by his beloved wife Alice, whom he missed
tremendously; his brothers Duane and Arlo Johnson; two brothers who died at birth,
Leslie and Vernon; and his parents. He is survived by his two daughters, Robbin Bitz
(Tom) and Terri Contreras (Javier); five grandchildren, Kristyn Bitz, Matthew Bitz (Alli),
Chad Bjornson, Joshua Johnson (Audra), and Michelle Smith; and three great-
grandchildren, Sabri Janovich, Aidon Janovich, and Joshua Johnson Jr. Norman was
also just weeks away from meeting his fourth great-grandchild, as Matthew and Alli are
first-time parents. Additionally, he is survived by his adorable 19-year-old Siamese cat,
Rosie, who kept him company in his thinking chair.
Norman will be laid to rest next to his wife at Spiritwood Cemetery in Spiritwood, ND.
