AUGUSTO GOMES COUTINHO

Augusto Coutinho, beloved husband, and cherished family member, peacefully departed from this world
on March 2, 2024, surrounded by those who loved him. He was 93 years old. Augusto's passing marks
the end of a life richly lived. He is preceded in death by his parents, several siblings, and his first wife.
Born in Portugal in 1930, Augusto grew up in Arentim Braga with eleven siblings. His journey led him to
Galt, California. Initially working on a dam project in Portugal, Augusto later joined the Portuguese Military
and became proficient in Morse code. It was during this time in the Portuguese Military that he was
assigned to the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores, where he met and married his first wife.
Their immigration to the US, petitioned by his wife's sister, brought them to Salem, Oregon in 1967. This
marked the beginning of a remarkable chapter in his life. Initially working as a bartender in his sister-in-
law's restaurant, Augusto later transitioned to the timber industry, where unfortunately, he suffered a
disabling injury while training a fellow worker and attempting to maintain the pace of the production line.
Despite this setback, Augusto's determination remained unshaken. Alongside his brother-in-law, he
ventured into entrepreneurship, opening a Texaco gas station—a testament to his industrious spirit and
determination. Following the passing of his first wife in the early 1980’s, Augusto moved to Southern
California, where he married Maria.
Augusto possessed a deep love for horticulture and a remarkable talent for nurturing life. His passion for
gardening was evident in the lushness of his Portuguese collards, fruit trees, and wine grapes. Every
year, he delighted in crafting his own wine, joyfully sharing this tradition with friends and family. He took
pleasure in indulging in good Portuguese food and wine.
Known for his unwavering generosity and willingness to lend a helping hand, Augusto and Maria moved
to Galt in 1995 to care for her parents.
Whether engaging in spirited domino games, discussing politics, composing poetry, or sharing his
expertise in Morse code, Augusto approached life with wit, humor, enthusiasm and a thirst for knowledge.
In the hearts of those who knew him, Augusto leaves an indelible mark. He is survived by his extended
family in Portugal, including three sisters and three brothers, as well as his niece Michelle and her
husband and children in Texas. Closer to Galt, he leaves behind his devoted wife, stepchildren, and step-
grandchildren, his wife’s family and his nephew and his wife who will forever cherish the memories of his
laughter, wisdom, and warmth.
Augusto Coutinho's legacy transcends the bounds of time and space, echoing through the lives he
touched and the love he shared. Though he may have departed from here, his spirit will continue to
inspire and guide us, reminding us of the enduring power of kindness, perseverance, and love.
May his soul find eternal peace, and may his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 14th at St Christopher's Catholic Church, 950 S
Lincoln Way, Galt, CA 95632 beginning with the Rosary, followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take
place at Galt-Arno Cemetery immediately following Mass at 14180 Joy Dr, Galt, CA 95632.

Augusto Coutinho, amado marido e querido por sua família, partiu em paz deste mundo no dia 2 de Março de 2024,
rodeado de quem o amava. Ele tinha 93 anos. A morte de Augusto marca o fim de uma vida rica. Ele é precedido na
morte por seus pais, vários irmãos e a sua primeira esposa.

Nascido em Portugal em 1930, Augusto cresceu em Arentim Braga com onze irmãos. A sua jornada o levou a Galt,
Califórnia. Inicialmente trabalhou num projeto de barragem em Portugal, Augusto mais tarde ingressou no Exército
Português e tornou-se proficiente em código Morse. Foi durante este tempo no Exército que foi designado para a ilha
de São Miguel, nos Açores, onde conheceu e casou com a sua primeira esposa.
A imigração deles para os EUA, solicitada pela sua cunhada, os trouxe para Salem, Oregon, em 1967. Isso marcou
o início de um capítulo notável na sua vida. Trabalhou inicialmente como empregado de bar no restaurante da sua
cunhada, Augusto depois mudou-se para a indústria madeireira, onde infelizmente sofreu uma lesão incapacitante
enquanto treinava um colega de trabalho e tentava manter o ritmo da linha de produção.
Apesar deste revés, a determinação de Augusto permaneceu inabalável. Ao lado do cunhado, ele aventurou-se no
empreendedorismo, abrindo um posto de gasolina Texaco – uma prova do seu espírito trabalhador e determinado.
Após o falecimento da sua primeira esposa no início dos anos 1980, Augusto mudou-se para o sul da Califórnia,
onde se casou com Maria.
Augusto possuía um profundo amor pela horticultura e um notável talento para cultivar. A sua paixão pelo cultivo era
evidente na exuberância das suas couves, árvores de fruto e videiras. Todos os anos, fazia o seu próprio vinho,
partilhando com alegria esta tradição com amigos e familiares. Tomava prazer em boa comida e vinhos portugueses.
Conhecido por sua inabalável generosidade e disposição em ajudar, Augusto e Maria mudaram-se para Galt em
1995 para cuidar dos pais de Maria.
Seja participando de jogos de dominó, discutindo política, compondo poesia ou compartilhando o seu conhecimento
em código Morse, Augusto encarava a vida com inteligência, humor, entusiasmo e sede de conhecimento.
No coração de quem o conheceu, Augusto deixa uma marca indelével. Ele deixa a sua extensa família em Portugal,
incluindo as suas irmãs e irmãos, bem como a sua sobrinha e o seu marido e filhos no Texas. Mais próximo de Galt,
ele deixa a sua devotada esposa, enteados, a família da sua esposa, e o seu sobrinho e a sua esposa em Galt, que
guardarão para sempre as memórias do seu riso, sabedoria e carinho.
O legado de Augusto Coutinho transcende os limites do tempo e do espaço, ecoando nas vidas que tocou e no amor
que partilhou. Embora ele possa ter partido daqui, o seu espírito continuará a inspirar-nos e guiar-nos, lembrando-
nos do poder duradouro da bondade, da perseverança e do amor.
Que a sua alma encontre a paz eterna, que a sua memória seja uma bênção para todos que o conheceram.
O funeral será às 10h30 da quinta-feira, 14 de Março, na Igreja Católica de St Christopher, 950 S Lincoln Way, Galt,
CA 95632, começando com o Rosário, seguido pela missa às 11h. O sepultamento será no Cemitério imediatamente
após a missa em 14180 Joy Dr, Galt, CA 95632.
